A Personal Reflection on Social Media’s Impact

Once upon a time the world had no social media.

Nice start for a tale for the new generations…

Do you remember how it all began?

It seems like only yesterday that social media was a new concept that only a selected few were aware of.

For me, my introduction to social media came maybe with myspace?

Back in early 2000, the then relatively unknown platform had just started to make waves in the internet world, and I knew that I had to be part of this new trend.

I was lucky enough to have a couple of friends who had already created profiles on the platform and shared their experiences with me. They showed me around the various features of the website, and soon enough I had set up my own account and posted my first status update: “I’m here!” It felt liberating – to suddenly be part of something much bigger than just my circle of friends.

The first post felt exciting yet nerve-wracking at the same time.

But I soon got more confident as I gained friends, now maybe we call them followers and engaged with others, for me unknown people online.

Soon, other platforms like Facebook, maybe in 2009 or so?, and Twitter were also emerging onto the scene, offering people another avenue for expressing themselves online.

Today, we take for granted what a difference social media has made in our lives. We may forget where it all started from but never underestimate its potential to revolutionize communication in ways unimaginable before!

If this is good or bad, I don’t know. But I have seen so many good things in social media! Recently I have seen a post made by a 80+ gentleman, who asked advice on his new 3d printer in one of Facebook’s 3d printing groups. What is this, if not cool and pure?

On the other hand, social media can and will ruin lifes. A careless public post and you easily can find yourself in the middle of a divorce or without a job in a second.

When social media started it’s journey, we didn’t know yet how it will change everything in just a decade.

Use it carefully!
